Why I Enjoy Baking Bread at Home
Recipes from The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Bible, King Arthur Flour and personal adaptations of recipes.
I love the smell of yeast rising bread any time of day. The finished warm loaves and rolls are my reward at the end of the process. I bake bread at least once a week.
There are six recipes I use regularly: Peasant bread, Honey Wheat, Whole Wheat, Garlic Pull Apart, Monkey Bread, Sweet Rolls. None of these are difficult and take just a few minutes per batch to gather ingredients and let the bread machine do its job.
Baking Flour (I buy the 25 lb. bags at Sam’s Club and keep in a 5-gallon bucket with a measuring cup.)
Whole Wheat Flour (King Arthur is my go to brand)
Vital Wheat Gluten (I used Hodgson Mill)(makes flour rise well)
Yeast (Fleischman’s Bread Machine or Instant Yeast)
Fresh Eggs (we have chickens)
Salt, (kosher, no iodized)
Water, Milk, Olive or Canola Oil, Butter
Add in’s: Herbs, Spices, Cheese etc.
In process… I skipped the photos of bread in the bread machine. Not the prettiness I want to share. I have also learned that any of the recipes are equally suited to not using a bread machine.
Kids favorite sweet rolls…
One I mentioned earlier is Peasant Bread, great for adding 2 tablespoons of dried rosemary too and then dipping in olive oil and fresh ground black pepper with bits of roasted minced garlic.
Whole Wheat is our go to sandwich bread, holds up to spreads and toasting equally well.
Sweet Rolls are hands down the winner, even over the Monkey Bread which I make for Saturday morning brunch with the grandsons. I bake these in the gas oven not the bread machine to get individual servings and cute mini loaves.
To get theses loaves and rolls done each week I shop Amazon. I’ve saved I don’t know how much money by baking our own bread each week. I think the cost comes in at about 50 cents a loaf or less and a whole lot of smiles.
